Towering 80-year-old Edmonton tree has date with a chainsaw
When the towering green ash was first planted in Oliver, the Second World War was only a looming menace in the future.

It's roots were firmly established when Neil Armstrong took his famous first steps on the moon and it has watched generations of families stroll under it’s mighty branches.

On Thursday, it will be cut down and carted away.

The tree, which has stood on 111 Street near 98 Avenue for at least 80 years, will be taken down because it was damaged during construction of the new Hendrix apartment complex.

Full Story (Metro Edmonton)

The beautiful thing about trees is that you can always grow a new one! Yeah, it sucks to cut it down prematurely, but it must have been getting close to its life expectancy anyway, no?

@chrisvazquez7 I agree about the tree -- probably had only 10 - 20 more years. I am not a fan of the tower from a design perspective (nor the townhouse base), and that is what propelled my comment.
I feel that if we don't call out bad design when we see it, then we are destined to get more of the same. Some of the recently announced Edmonton projects and some that are under construction are far more advanced in the realm of aesthetics. This could have been a good project -- it fell short, in my opinion.

@chrisvazquez7 You can always grow a new one, but to get the benefits of a large mature tree takes a massive investment of time which cannot be accelerated. Those benefits are now lost and won't be reproduced for decades.

The life expectancy of a green ash is about 100-120 years, so it's pretty likely it would have continued to stand for another 20, 40, or more years.

Got some shots from the show suits, there is a one bedroom and a two bedroom currently.
