It has only been a few years since the 2010 completion of the world's current tallest structure, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, yet another major project under construction on the Arabian Peninsula will soon surpass this height. The superstructure of Jeddah Economic Company and Kingdom Holding Company's Kingdom Tower is rising from the desert like a concrete mirage.
The massive 3,307-foot (1,008-metre) building features a design by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture - the same firm responsible for the design of the Burj Khalifa - in partnership with Dar al-Handasah Shair & Partners. Realization of the building, tasked to major construction firm Saudi Bin Laden Group, has been progressing swiftly since the first above-grade work began in September 2014, with concrete now reaching over 20 storeys high.
To help illustrate the building's growth over the past several months, we turn to archival webcam stills of the site, captured between January and August 2015, and animated into a GIF.
Set to open in 2019, the completed tower will stretch over a kilometre into the sky. While the Kingdom Tower will contain 252 levels, only 167 of these floors will be habitable, as much of the space in the tower's upper levels will be far too narrow to comfortably accommodate businesses or residents.
