A few weeks ago, we reviewed some of the projects currently under construction in Montreal, illustrating the city's rebound in economic and population growth and the resulting burst of highrise construction. Boulevard René-Lévesque Ouest is the epicentre of this new construction boom, as several projects are changing the face of an area once dominated by surface parking lots. Along the thoroughfare, several condominium and office projects are adding density while reinforcing its urban character, symbolizing the relative shift in Montrealers' lifestyle.
At the intersection with Rue de la Montagne, a couple blocks north of the Bell Centre, the Essaris Group is currently erecting a two-tower mixed-used development known as Icône Condos. With a striking design imagined by Béïque Legault Thuot, phase one has recently topped out at 39 floors, rising 146 metres above street level. It consists of 358 units ranging from compact studios to expansive penthouses spanning two full levels, and offers residents a wide selection of amenities such as a tennis court, a salt-water pool, and a fitness centre.
The unique shape of the building gives some of the units an uncommon layout with intimate spaces. Indeed, the protruding element supported by an impressive freestanding column along Boulevard René-Lévesque creates the space for a living room featuring open 180° views over the city and the Saint Lawrence River. The electric blue floor-to-ceiling glazing accentuates the feeling of openness of the units, and lets large amount of natural light flood in.
Completion of this phase is currently scheduled for early 2016, and will be followed by the construction of the second phase of the project some time next year. Rising at 27 storeys and 107 metres, the west tower will consist of rental apartments and office space. Once again, the tower will boast a strong architectural identity with balconies cutting sleek diagonal lines through the glazing, while the eastern facade tilts towards the core of the tower before leaning outwards for the upper third section. In the lobby, a diamond-patterned white ceiling and furniture bring the eccentric exterior design to the inside. Icône is definitely set to become an eye-catching addition to the growing Montreal condominium market and skyline.
We will keep you updated as the project develops and new details continue to emerge about phase 2. In the meantime, additional information and renderings can be found in our dataBase file for the project, linked below. Want to get involved in the discussion?
