The Canadian city of Vancouver prides itself on downtown density that is clearly evident when walking the streets or snapping photos of the skyline. By both population and the sheer number of buildings, Vancouver's core is one of the densest in North America. It's no surprise then that land is becoming increasingly scarce, forcing developers and architects to build on narrow or abnormally shaped lots. Now under construction, the mixed-use Parq Vancouver complex is rising on one of these difficult sites.
Located between BC Place stadium and the new One Pacific residential development, the 800,000-square-foot 'urban resort' provides a new home for the nearby Edgewater Casino. Upon completion, Parq Vancouver will host approximately 600 gaming slots, 75 table games, convention space, five restaurants, a spa, and 5,000 square feet of retail space.
The property will also offer two hotels. The largest will be operated by JW Marriott and house 288 guest rooms and 41 suites. A signature hotel called The Douglas — named after notable Canadian explorer David Douglas — will offer 178 guest rooms and 10 suites.
Parq Holdings Limited Partnership, a joint venture between Paragon Development, Dundee Corporation and PBC VUR Limited Partnership, is responsible for the project. IBI/HB Architects is the architect of record for the ARCOP + acdf-designed project, which takes the form of three glazed towers rising from a common podium.
The L-shaped structure will be built to LEED Gold standards. Construction of the complex has advanced past the groundworks stage, and footings are now visible above ground. Forum contributor mcminsen captured the progress during a recent trek to the site. Parq Vancouver is scheduled to open in January 2017.
