The Winnipeg Subway as planned by Norman Douglas Wilson, image via donaldstreet.wordpress.com

As Winnipeg's electric streetcars and trolleybuses were phased out throughout the 1950s and 1960s, city council hired Norman Douglas Wilson, the transportation engineer who designed the Toronto subway, to design a similar rapid transit system for Manitoba's capital. The 1959 plan called for three underground lines to service the city centre and its immediate surroundings. Ultimately, cheap oil pushed the city to opt for a brand new fleet of diesel buses instead, abandoning Douglas' plan for good.
