Condominiums provide buyers with a longer term housing arrangement, design freedom in their home, and growing access to shared amenities. Many condo owners even make money after watching their units appreciate in value. But as the dynamics around employment change, more and more people are looking for additional flexible housing options. Numerous developers are tapping into this market, leading to a boom in highrise rental construction across Canada, including Edmonton, where one of the city's first purpose built rental towers in 20 years is close to topping off

The Hendrix by Edgar Development is being constructed on 111 Street NW, steps away from Grandin LRT station, between the downtown core and the University of Alberta. The 260-unit building includes townhomes, studios, as well as one-, two-, and three-bedroom options within its 30-storey frame. Targeting LEED Silver certification, The Hendrix features a design by Dialog Architects which incorporates the historic J.T. Ross House. While its exterior is currently undergoing restoration, the house will be converted into boutique office space.

Photos from Forum contributors DarrenK and Daveography show the building close to its full height. The window wall facade is marked by grey spandrel and balconies on the west and east sides, while the north and south walls are currently clad with white panels. The heritage house sits below a red crane mounted on the exterior of the building, which is expected to be complete this fall.
