German firm HENN Architekten has been announced as the winner of a design competition for a new office tower in Shenzhen. The 44-storey edifice will become the primary building at the new headquarters of Chinese software company Kingdee.
With the goal of maximizing space on the narrow site, which is flanked by two existing nine-storey structures, the Kingdee Tower has a pentagonal floor plan that expands twice along the building's height. These cantilevered projections are where the conference levels, restaurants, and public spaces will be situated.
In addition to adding a design punch to the building, the building's windows balance the need for solar shading with the desire for floor-to-ceiling views. Strategically positioned throughout the facade, opaque elements ensure ample shade in the designated office areas. On the upper levels of the building, where sun intensity is expected to be the strongest, about half of the facade is split between a solid and transparent articulation.
The 210-metre multifaceted building will be accessible via a three-storey atrium. The skeleton of the tower is expected to be topped out in 2017, with the building officially opening a year later.
