When someone thinks of Canada, they might think snow and wide open spaces. While the country has both of those things in abundance, over 80 percent of Canadians live in thriving urban areas. The continual urbanization of Canada is palpable — all one has to do is look at the skyline of any major Canadian city and count the number of cranes. Toronto, the largest city in the country, is experiencing perhaps the most dramatic intensification in its history, as new residential, hotel, and office towers are welcomed every year to the Ontario capital. While Toronto developers and architects certainly have their hands full at home, many are also looking to broaden their brand. The growing Western Canadian metropolis of Calgary is the perfect place for them to do so, and it's where the 31-storey 6th and Tenth is now rising.

Calgary has witnessed a recent surge in population, owing mostly to immigration. Located just south of the downtown core, the Beltline area is where many of these new residents are deciding to live. In this true neighbourhood in transition, Toronto builders Lamb Development Corp and Fortress Real Developments are taking their own piece of the pie. The 230-unit 6th and Tenth features nine-foot ceiling heights and floor-to-ceiling windows. A Lamb signature, some interior units also contain exposed concrete, giving the living space a rugged industrial look. Lamb has said the project's floor plans are "the best I have ever designed."

An outdoor lounging space and pool graces the podium as sculptural gardens mark the ground floor, where a fine dining restaurant is planned. Core Architects, also based in Toronto, have designed the building. Strips of white precast flanked by glass adds texture to the base while a series of balconies are randomly arranged on the tower above.

The building has now worked its way above ground level, evidenced by new photos from Forum contributor Surrealplaces. Lamb looks to be in Calgary for the long haul, with the twin Orchard towers moving ahead, but he's also being joined by another notable Toronto builder. Great Gulf Homes, who are currently working on a number of major highrise projects including One Bloor East, is spearheading a development in the East Village. Other developers from across Canada will likely join in on the action, as Calgary's urban renaissance continues to bring modern architecture to an energetic downtown.
