With a spire that stretches to a height of 322.5 metres, Q1 is recognized as the tallest building in Australia. Located in Gold Coast — a southeastern Queensland city bordering Brisbane — Q1 is about to have some company in the clouds. The 88-storey Iluka was granted planning permissions last year, paving the way for the 295-metre tower to become the tallest building in the city by roof height.

Hong Kong developer Forise Investments put forward the $1 billion (AUD) development proposal, which will stand on the shores of Surfers Paradise, a dynamic entertainment hub with a dense cluster of highrise condominiums. It will contain a total of 693 residential apartments including one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. A three-storey podium will feature a restaurant, a cafe, and retail spaces. Though the details are currently foggy, a public art feature and external lighting aim to add a whimsical element to the skyline.

The rounded balconies of the tower symbolize crashing waves according to architects DBI Design Pty Ltd. Its impressive height is possible due to the lack of maximum height restrictions in the area where it will be constructed. To be located at the corner of Trickett Street and The Esplanade, the site used to be home to the 17-storey Iluka Beach Resort, which was demolished in 2013. As a condition of approval, the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club is receiving $330,000 and more than $1.2 million will go to the City of Gold Coast council.
