Just two weeks after a would-be record-breaking building was proposed to climb over a mile high in Tokyo, yet another plan seeks to break that elusive barrier. Italian architect Carlo Ratti Associati has unveiled an ambitious scheme that could see the world's highest observation deck and vertical park. Developed in conjunction with schlaich bergermann partner, the 1,609-metre tower brands itself as The Mile, an upright, wrapped, and twirled version of Central Park.

No city has been referenced in any of the details announced so far, indicating that the proposal can be adapted to several locations. The building would be covered with a bountiful supply of vegetation aiming to provide an ecosystem for animal species. A collection of glazed capsules would orbit the 20-metre-wide central core, transporting passengers to the spacious rooftop lookout and restaurant. The capsules are also large enough to double as meeting and dining rooms, potentially even hosting concerts and pools.

Though its gigantic scale naturally raises questions about its feasibility, a web of pre-stressed cables guarantees a lightweight structure. Recreational activities ranging from rock climbing to bird watching provide additional tourist-centric amenities. Ingenuity from British design studio Atmos ensures each capsule is equipped with open-air virtual reality screens, redefining the individual's city-viewing experience.

Ratti hopes to capitalize on the successes of past novel projects like the Eiffel Tower and London Eye, which generate substantial annual profits. While the client has not been disclosed, more details should come to light when the dramatic concept is presented at MIPIM, a Cannes real estate fair, in mid-March.
