In a recent interview for CBS News' 60 Minutes, Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) revealed their plan for a new NFL stadium in Washington DC. Though a location has yet to be chosen to replace the current FedExField, the existing facility's location in Landover, Maryland has historically suffered from poor transit accessibility, which has likely contributed to falling attendance in recent years.

Renderings depict the 60,000-seat venue's exterior lined with a recreational moat and artificial beaches capable of supporting activities such as surfing and kayaking, as well as a climbing wall incorporated into the stadium's exterior facade. The stadium would be accessed via a network of pedestrian bridges crossing the moat. The open-air facility would be wrapped in a translucent skin inspired by ocean waves that terminate at an undulating roofline, creating an architectural dialogue between the structure and the surrounding moat.

The flowing nature of the design is reminiscent of another BIG project, Google's proposed North Bayshore Campus in Mountain View, California. Both projects feature wave-inspired facades lined by public spaces, though the scale of the DC stadium project will be much grander.

We look forward to learning more details about this major sporting facility, and will be sure to return with more updates as additional information emerges.
