Dubai offers a long list of recreational activities for people of all ages to enjoy. You can check out the views from the world's tallest building, shop at the second largest mall on the planet, slide down the tubes at Aquaventure Waterpark, or hit the slopes at an indoor ski resort. Now, a proposed major attraction — this time targeting adventurous clientele — could add another page to Dubai's tourist pamphlets.

Inspired by the enormity of Mount Everest, Hong Kong-based architects 10 Design have been commissioned to design a base jump tower. At 325 metres tall, the tower would provide stunning views of the skyline in addition to performing as a platform for extreme sports. Evoking the ascent up Everest, several 'base camps' will enable a variety of climbing, abseiling, and jumping activities.

The base of the tower has been designed for families and will include junior climbing walls, wire-assisted high diving, and free-fall facilities. Semi-external climbing, vertical cliff camping, and abseiling areas will mark the midsection of the structure, while the top would be dedicated to 'ice climbs.'

The building's sculptural hexagrid skin flares out at the lower and top levels to accommodate these sporting activities, creating three peaks at 200, 250, and 300 metres for wire-assisted free-falls and base jump points. Three open spaces at ground level would accommodate landings. Each segment of the tower has been designed not only to exude architectural excellence, but to provide a functional and truly interactive experience, allowing users to scale numerous exterior sections of this multifaceted structure.

It's not clear when the project could be finished, but it's certainly one to watch. Additional images and information can be found in the Database file linked below. Want to get involved in the discussion? Check out the associated Forum thread or leave a comment at the bottom of this page.
