Long Island City, located in the New York City borough of Queens, is known for its dense concentration of art galleries and cultural institutions. Most recently, it's become home to a growing number of highrise residential projects that are contributing to the ongoing intensification of the neighbourhood. One of the most recent — and significant — new additions to this emerging skyline is the 193-metre (634-foot) Tower 28

Located at 42-12 28th Street, the 57-storey tower by Heatherwood NYC tops out just short of the 200.5-metre One Court Square, the tallest building in New York state outside of Manhattan. It will however become the tallest residential building within those boundaries. Built on a site previously occupied by a parking lot and two-storey commercial building, the 477-unit tower has soared across the street from another Heatherwood creation, 27 on 27th, a rental building completed in 2013.

Designed by Goldstein Hill & West Architects, the project now appears to have reached its full height. Sleek curtain wall glazing has now sheltered most of the building, with about 15 floors currently left uncovered. The tower features a setback at the 44th storey, achieving contrast against the alternating side's slender elevations. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows and balconies are oriented to provide unobstructed vistas of the sprawling Manhattan cityscape.

An extensive amenities package is included in the development. A third floor resident lounge, fourth floor fitness centre, outdoor deck, pool house, full spa, screening room, children's play area, games room, and rooftop terrace have all been designed to keep residents busy when they move into their new quarters in 2017.
