The Moscow International Business Center, also simply known as Moscow City, is a dense new commercial district home to Europe's tallest buildings. CITY, a public company created in 1992, was assigned the task of overseeing and managing the development of the bustling commercial, residential, and entertainment hub. Though the district is still under construction, over a dozen skyscrapers now form an imposing segment of the Moscow skyline.

In this week's Throwback Thursday, we take a look at how the district was shaping up in June 2011 compared to June 2015. The three-building Naberezhnaya Tower complex forms the highest peak in the district from this angle on Third Ring Road. It was the tallest skyscraper in Europe until the NBBJ-designed City of Capitals, visible just to the right, completed construction at 309.8 metres in 2009. The green-clad Eurasia Tower is seen under construction just to the left of the Federation Towers, which had been placed on hold from 2008 to 2011 due to the economic recession. The shimmering orange glazing of the 338.8-metre Mercury City Tower is visible in the background, on its way to becoming Europe's tallest in 2012 after overtaking The Shard in London

In 2015, a number of new additions have significantly expanded the young skyline. The IQ-Quarter complex blocks most of the now complete Eurasia Tower from the highway. To the left, the residential tower of the SOM-designed OKO complex has become the second tallest building in Europe at 353.6 metres, behind only the highest of the no-longer-delayed Federation Towers. A sliver of the twisting Evolution Tower, which was completed in 2015, appears just right of the City of Capitals and Naberezhnaya Tower. Of the top ten tallest towers in Europe, seven of them are located within Moscow City.
