Just east of Vancouver in the city of Burnaby, a popular shopping centre is undergoing a dramatic overhaul of epic proportions. The Brentwood Town Centre will double its square footage and become a modern urban luxury retail zone anchored by fashion stores, upscale restaurants, and a cinema. To be rebranded 'The Amazing Brentwood,' it will become one of British Columbia's largest shopping centres, with 250 stores and restaurants serving a ballooning population. The retail component is just one piece of a 28-acre puzzle that will ultimately feature 13 residential towers, office space, and multiple gathering areas. The first two towers in the mega-complex, Brentwood One and Two, are already starting to make their presence felt.
Developed by Shape Properties with a master plan by James KM Cheng Architects, two 56-storey buildings are climbing as work on the retail section presses forward. Photos by Forum contributor mcminsen highlight the busy scene, which is easily identified by the many cranes servicing the development.
The complex will be connected with a network of retail-lined roads and pedestrian-friendly routes. Brentwood Boulevard's 22 retailers and patio spaces will guarantee high foot traffic through all seasons, while the open-air central plaza mixes fashion brands with more patios, pubs, and casual dining choices. These multi-level outlets will be crowned by lush garden rooftops. The SkyTrain will also be fully integrated with the new neighbourhood, making it easy to get around the city.
A third tower, now in sales, promises to add 526 more homes packed within 54 storeys. The amenity-rich development will include a fitness centre, music room, study hall, social lounge, and outdoor gardens. The enormous project is situated just across the street from another multi-tower development, Solo District, which is also pumping new life into the area with contemporary residences and retail spaces.
