Another tower crane for a new condominium is about to stand high above the Beltline community in Calgary. Situated across from the recently revitalized Central Memorial Park, the city's oldest surviving park, the aptly named Park Point will take the form of a 34-storey building. The project is being built by Qualex-Landmark, a real estate group that has constructed more concrete highrises in Calgary than any other developer.

The 289-unit project began construction in October after strong sales, which is no surprise considering the building's park-front location. Since then, crews have reached the bottom of the excavated pit. Photos from our Calgary Forum contributors show preliminary work for the crane base now taking shape, while a large mound of soil serves as the ramp for vehicles entering and exited the pit.

The architects at IBI Group have imagined a building with a black grid facade that expands as the tower rises. This staggered effect is juxtaposed against white spandrel and a coloured soffit scheme. At its base, a double-height lobby and canopy will welcome residents and visitors.

Atop street-level live/work townhomes, the podium roof will host nearly 9,000 square feet of amenity space. A zen terrace is planned to include multiple seating areas arranged around a fire pit, water feature, and yoga sundeck. The amenity offering continues on the inside, where a fully equipped fitness centre, steam room, and sauna will be found. A cozy private owners club lounge complete with a kitchen and fireplace invites residents to entertain their guests, who can stay overnight in an appointed suite.

Capitalizing on the demand for high-density, inner-city living, Park Point's selection of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, townhome, and penthouse units should satisfy the growing population looking to benefit from downtown's ample services. Completion is expected in 2018, by which time information about an anticipated second residential tower should be widely available.
