The United Kingdom's largest city after London is getting a brand new state-of-the-art tower. Set to become the tallest office building in Birmingham, 103 Colmore Row is the latest addition to the development portfolios of Rockspring Property Investment Managers and Sterling Property Ventures

The 23-storey NatWest Tower that has stood on the site since the 1970s is now being dismantled. Scaffolding began to obscure the Brutalist structure in July 2015 and a crane was erected two months later. In its place, a glimmering 26-floor landmark tower will make a modern statement amid the Victorian architectural style of its neighbours.

Doone Silver Architects has designed the complex, which takes the shape of several elongated blocks of varying heights. The high-quality glass envelope will be affixed with silver vertical fins that not only add texture to the facade, but reflect light differently throughout the day. On the ground level, a winter garden with a cafe and retail space will contribute constant year-round animation to the streetscape. Near the building's apex, room has been reserved for an 8,600-square-foot restaurant and an associated 'lantern' space that will offer panoramic views to visitors.

As demolition of the previous tower progresses, crews will leave the existing four-storey basement and foundations mostly intact for reuse. A series of concrete transfer walls will distribute the weight of the new structure to the foundations wherever possible. If all goes according to plan, the building will welcome tenants in 2018.
