As construction crews work on the underground levels of the Ice District's Stantec Tower and JW Marriott and The Legends Private Residences, the Edmonton Tower is assuming its final form. At 27 storeys, it's one of the shorter towers in the upcoming mixed-use hub, but its sleek design and contemporary aesthetic symbolizes a new start for Edmonton's downtown core.

With the backing of WAM Development Group and Katz Group Properties, the 130,000 square feet of office space and 40,000 square feet of retail space are quickly coming together. The absence of intrusive interior columns permits flexibility and customization of the office floor plates, which feature nine- to 11-foot ceiling heights. Greeting tenants on the ground floor will be a cafe, bank, and public art installations. The second floor will host common meeting, conference, and training rooms, while a daycare with an outdoor terrace and green roof will be situated on the fourth floor.

Continuing the theme of environmental sustainability expressed throughout the Ice District, the Edmonton Tower has been designed to meet LEED Gold standards. High efficiency mechanical equipment will reduce heating and cooling costs and rainwater harvesting has been planned in an effort to reduce the building's carbon footprint.

A recent site visit by Forum contributor Daveography yielded photos of the steel-framed boxed crown that now tops the building. The curtain wall glass and spandrel panels that cover the majority of the facade are creeping their way up the building, nearly cladding the entire structure in its translucent skin. As the Edmonton Tower approaches completion, it gives us a good idea of what to expect when the remainder of the Ice District evolves into the 25-acre urban beacon it promises to be.
