The 1903-built Church of Saints Cyril & Methodius and St. Raphael in New York City has a new imposing neighbour. Extell Development Company's latest tower stands at 555 10th Avenue between West 40th and 41st Streets in Manhattan, next to the neo-gothic place of worship, which in 2012 sold 140,000 square feet of air rights for $16.5 million.

The 52-storey project hosts 725,000 square feet of space. Within it, a 300-room dormitory will occupy floors two through seven, topped by 598 rental apartment units. One-fifth of those units will be reserved for low-income individuals. Students and rental tenants will have to enter the building through separate entrances.

Unfortunately, students will also not have access to the full suite of amenities afforded to residents. They'll naturally be envious of the bowling alley, games room, children's lounge, dog run, yoga studio, fitness room, putting green, club room, and two swimming pools that the large building offers.

The building's reflective glazing and vertical stainless steel accents were envisioned by SLCE Architects. The sleek cladding has nearly sealed the full envelope of the building, as evidenced in stunning sunset shots by SkyriseCities Founder Edward Skira. The tower's crown is expected to be illuminated at night upon completion in 2017.
