An empty pocket of land and a two-storey brick building in Edmonton have been targeted for a mixed-use arts-focused redevelopment. At 102A Avenue and 96 Street in the evolving neighbourhood of The Quarters, Arts Habitat Edmonton and Artists Urban Village have partnered with the City of Edmonton to construct a purpose-built development for artists and arts organizations.

The Artists Quarters will "provide support to multi-generational, mixed-income artists" through homes and live/work studio space. Over 60 residential units of single and family sizes will be offered. Fostering social engagement and creativity, communal spaces include a kitchen and dining area, a shared library, a workshop, and a dedicated garden.

The first four floors which comprise the podium are set to host a theatre, dance studio, and an art gallery. Offices for Arts Habitat and studios for both individual artists and organizations will also be included. Renderings suggest the existing brick structure on the site will be incorporated into the Kasian-designed development. The project intends to implement the environmental concepts embedded in the passive house design approach, which highlights energy efficiency through super insulated walls and windows, heat recover ventilation units, and air-tight construction.

If built, the project will be a key component in the redevelopment of The Quarters. The City of Edmonton is spending $56 million CAD on infrastructure upgrades and new construction in an effort to spur mixed-use development in the neighbourhood, which is located just east of the downtown core. Composed of five unique precincts, The Armature will be the pedestrian-friendly linkage that defines the community.
