The new three-tower headquarters for the online shopping giant Amazon is entrenching the company's place in Seattle. The first tower is already open, the second is nearly complete, and the third will soon accomplish the trifecta. Tying this complex together are three bubbling biospheres that are creating a striking silhouette erupting from the Denny Triangle neighbourhood.

Designed by NBBJ, the multi-storey structures will house shops, workspaces, and flexible meeting and lounging areas surrounded by mature trees and lush gardens. A full-time horticulturist will be hired to maintain the plant life and natural vibrancy of the space. While work on the interior progresses, the intricate steel exoskeletons are currently being painted white.

Glazing has also appeared on the exterior, giving the rounded structures a greenhouse-like expression. The transparency of the glass allows the interior botanical zones to be visible from the street. When completed in 2017, the three domes will become an innovative centrepiece for Amazon's new 3.3 million-square-foot urban campus.

Major technology companies across the United States are moving into colossal new headquarters that emphasize social interaction, environmental performance, and open concept spaces. Facebook's Frank Gehry-designed Silicon Valley offices are topped by a park, while the ring-shaped Apple Campus in Cupertino is surrounded by sprawling green spaces. With a focus on greenery and impactful architecture, the Amazon biospheres will be a welcome addition to the growing list of futuristic campuses that give these technology companies a strong public face.
