Famed architect Zaha Hadid tragically passed away earlier this year of a heart attack, but her vision lives on with her architecture firm, Zaha Hadid Architects.

A design she created prior to her death will soon be coming to fruition in Doha, Qatar. A fluid design based on a desert hyacinth, the 70,000-square-metre structure will house 120 apartment rooms and 200 hotel rooms in the Marina District of Lusail, Doha. Located near the site of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Finals, the building is part of an ongoing expansion of the district, which is located 23 kilometres north of Central Doha. ZHA — now led by Hadid's partner Patrick Shumacher — is working on this project with developer Al Alfia Holding, which is owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad who originally commissioned Hadid to design the project.

The fluid form of the building was inspired by the desert hyacinth, a flower that is native to the Arabian Gulf. It has a nine-pointed structure that helps to shield visitors and residents from the sun. The entire structure will be covered with a mashrabiya screen skin, a design element common in Islamic architecture. Completion on the project is set for 2020.

Lusail is a developing community that is expected to shortly be home to around 450,000 people. It will soon be connected to Doha via a light rail system, allowing residents and visitors of the hotel/condo structure to travel between the big city and marina region easily.
