Each year on July 4th, Americans mark independence from the British Empire. It was in 1776 that the thirteen American colonies were recognized as a new nation, one that is now celebrating 240 years. The festivities that accompany the celebrations on this day range from spectacular fireworks displays and parades to family picnics and barbecues. Some of the country's most notable landmarks also honour the day through dazzling illuminations.

One of the most famous skyscrapers in the world, New York's Empire State Building, has upper tiers that are bathed in dancing patterns of red, white, and blue light. The international icon has been recognizing significant occasions with changing colour combinations since 1976. In 2012, a new LED system was installed, giving the tower amplified illumination capabilities. The video below, posted to the official Empire State Building YouTube channel, portrays the 2014 light show:

Also in 2012, the 47-storey Miami Tower updated their lighting scheme with a more energy-efficient system. This replaced archaic fixtures comprised of lamps, ballasts, and coloured gels that required constant maintenance. The upgrade allows the tower to display more elaborate and quick colour transitions.

The West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building provides the perfect setting to take in the fireworks extravaganza in Washington D.C. A Capitol Fourth has featured a star-studded lineup of musicians each year over the past three decades. The 2016 event will include performances by Grammy Award-winning singers Smokey Robinson and Kenny Loggins.

Photographers will be out in full force, pointing their cameras skywards at the illuminated towers and exploding fireworks that evoke warm feelings of patriotism and public spirit. If you manage to capture any photos yourself, be sure to post them in the Photos and Videos section of our Forum.
