The world's next tallest building is over 20 percent structurally complete, as Jeddah Economic Company and Kingdom Holding Company continue to watch construction unfold on their monumental development. With 167 habitable floors stretching over a kilometre-high volume, the Jeddah Tower will handily surpass the 828-metre height of Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which has been the world's tallest structure since 2007.
The tower's massive core currently hovers around the 45th storey mark, translating to approximately 180 metres. Photos from the desert site show the tower's isolated location, which will soon change as a new mixed-use district — the three-phase Jeddah Economic City — develops around the megatall centrepiece. A myriad of giant cranes occupy all faces of the three-pronged structure as yellow self-climbing formwork vividly indicates the point crews have reached.
The tripod approach to the building's foundations is reminiscent of the shape of other superstructures, including the Burj Khalifa and CN Tower. The tower's tapering figure, like a glass needle piercing the sky, will be clad in high-quality curtain wall glazing. Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, in association with Dar al-Handasah Shair & Partners, are the team responsible for the design.
The sheer amount of floor area within Jeddah Tower's interior demands a diverse building program. Class A office space and luxury residential units of varying sizes will be combined with serviced apartments and a hotel operated by Four Seasons. Naturally, the skyscraper will boast the highest observation deck in the world when completed in 2019.
