In the course of our daily reporting, we often uncover unusual projects, places, or connections that don't make the final cut. Instead of keeping it to ourselves, we're pleased to share our weekly Architrivia.

Bankers Hall in Calgary, image by Forum contributor Surrealplaces

From the sloped rooflines of the Suncor Energy Centre to the terraced top of the Canterra Tower, Calgary's skyline is capped by a landscape of distinctive building crowns. In the case of the Bankers Hall complex, not only does the unique roof add architectural embellishment to the building, but it closely resembles an iconic symbol of Alberta. Completed in 1989 and 2000, the twin 52-storey towers adopt the hallmarks of the postmodern style of architecture.

The flag of Calgary

When viewed from a distance, the angled crowns of the complex resemble a pair of cowboy hats. Clad in a monochromatic silver colour, the pinnacle of Bankers Hall East has been compared to a white cowboy hat, a symbol represented on Calgary's flag. White cowboy hats are also often presented as gifts to foreign dignitaries by the municipal government as a gesture of friendship and pride.
