North American architecture fanatics are getting to know the work of Danish practice Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) quite personally. After building some of the boldest contemporary structures ever seen in Europe, the firm has set their sights on new territory overseas. From Two World Trade Center in New York City to Telus Sky in Calgary, BIG is quickly entering the upper echelons of the architecture firmament. BIG's first completed condominium design in the United States has officially been recognized in Miami, where the twisting profiles of a twin-tower project have joined the Coconut Grove neighbourhood.

South Florida development firm Terra is responsible for the Grove at Grand Bay development at 2675 and 2669 South Bayshore Drive, which consists of two 20-storey towers. The project is the first set of residential towers to be completed in Coconut Grove in over a decade, leading the revitalization of the historic Miami neighbourhood. Overlooking Biscayne Bay and Regatta Park, with views of Key Biscayne, downtown Miami, and Miami Beach, the development's prized location puts residents within walking distance of the business district's eclectic selection of restaurants and shops.

Miami's contemporary condominium vernacular has provided a template with which to work. The organic pair of towers incorporates a glass facade and 12-foot-deep balconies to ensure ample access to private outdoor space. The distorted profile of the buildings optimizes views and flexible floor plans for residents. Designer Raymond Jungles has created a campus environment of lush greenery that includes nearly 500 trees, over 15,000 plants, and multiple water features. This floral landscape reflects the project's commitment to sustainability — Grove at Grand Bay is slated to become the first all-residential tower in Florida to achieve LEED Gold certification.

The development was launched in 2012 to strong international and domestic interest. Over half of the 98 units were sold to buyers based in the United States. Residents are beginning to take ownership of their units ahead of planned occupancy in the fall. When they settle in, they'll have a score of amenities to enjoy, including a rooftop pool, a five-star spa and fitness centre, a private dining room, and a pet spa for their furry companions. The penthouse owner will have a full floor with 10,000 square feet of space to roam around in, plus another 5,000 square feet of outdoor space.
