New residences are popping up throughout Calgary's rapidly changing East Village neighbourhood, but that's not the only land use that's defining the cityscape. Widewaters Group is finishing up work on the 14-storey EV Hilton Hotel, which will combine the Hilton Garden Inn Calgary Downtown and Homewood Suites Calgary Downtown into one complex.

As the 320-suite project nears completion, the two hotels are currently accepting reservations for dates beyond September 20. Guests will come to enjoy a number of amenities, including a fitness centre, indoor pool, restaurant and bar, 4,000 square feet of meeting space, and a rooftop terrace overlooking the Rocky Mountains. The development has been built to accommodate both short and extended stays.

The Marshall Tittemore Architect-designed development features a glazed corner while the neighbouring elevations of black and white panelling add a contrasting effect to the facade. A randomly arranged pattern of staggered windows brings lightness to the solidity of the opaque cladding. On the darker wall, strips of grey extend the varying material motif the project inhabits.

Work on the glazed lobby area and second floor continues as finishing details come together on the facade. The contemporary complex anchors the corner of 4th Street SE and 7th Avenue SE, where a surface parking lot had sucked life out of the urban streetscape. The building abuts the parking-free N3 Condo — both developments represent the ongoing transformation of Calgary's Downtown East Village.
