Our previous construction update of MacEwan University's newest downtown campus addition revealed how some of the interior portions of the building were taking shape. In subsequent months, there have been noticeable changes to the exterior of the Edmonton facility, which now boasts splashes of lime green cladding along the transitional edges of the 104 Avenue frontage.
City Centre is one of three campuses for the 20,000-student institution. MacEwan University’s new Centre for Arts and Culture will consolidate the creative programming currently offered at the west-end campus with additional space to accommodate future growth. The 430,000-square-foot complex will house classrooms, laboratories, exhibits, and performance spaces amplified by state-of-the-art technology.
The five-storey building enhances the educational experience for students of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications. A below-grade floor offers approximately 93 parking stalls while nearly 18,000 square feet of retail space is incorporated into the design. The project will also include a recital hall, proscenium theatre, art gallery, on-site restaurant, and new dance and rehearsal spaces.
Designed by Bing Thom Architects in association with Manasc Isaac, the facade is expressed through a series of vertical translucent and opaque strips of glazing. Interior work has advanced to the final stages, which include cosmetic finishings like painting. Even as work nears its conclusion, manpower for the week consistently averages over 300 people. Interior building components will continue their gradual assembly until the anticipated 2017 opening.
