Soon to replace one of Midtown Atlanta's last affordable rental apartments, a recently approved 43-storey luxury hotel and residence by Trillist and sbe Entertainment is set to dramatically change the urban character of what has become a pricey corner of the booming Georgia capital. Known as SLS Atlanta Hotel & Residences, the $100 million luxury tower will be the city's largest structure since the Great Recession of 2008.

Designed by Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart for the LA-based sbe, the SLS Atlanta Hotel & Residences will be comprised of a 214-room hotel component paired with 66 units of residential condos, all of which will rest atop 12 storeys of above-grade parking. Lost to the wrecker's ball will be a drab yet affordable low-rise apartment block, the Crescent Place Apartments, which used to offer locals an affordable place to live within the quickly gentrifying city centre.

Set to begin construction in 2017, the new development is projected to open just two years later in 2019. Part of the ever-expanding SLS brand of hotels, which have been cropping up across the United States over the last few years, the Atlanta project will be in line with the company's reputation for luxury and style. Joining the 214 hotel rooms, the tower's 66 condo units (up from 56 as originally planned) will range from 1,600 to 4,000 square feet, with a mix of two-, three-, and four-bedroom units.

SkyriseCities will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
