A waterfront site in the Copenhagen suburb of Kastrup will soon give rise to a new country headquarters building for Ferring Pharmaceuticals A/S following the ceremonial ground breaking on Monday. The Foster + Partners-designed building will occupy a strategic site adjacent to the Copenhagen International Airport and Øresund crossing connecting the city to Malmö, Sweden.

A large stone plinth, designed to host street furniture and landscaping while also serving as a flood protection measure, hosts six stacked office floors. The floor plates expand in prominence as the glazed building rises, providing shade to the levels below. The building's verticality culminates with a cantilevered rooftop.

The structure is triangular in form, carved in accordance with the site's unique shape, which is surrounded by water on all sides. Inside, an airy atrium and perimeter walkways produce panoramic views while providing spaces for social events and conferences. From the lobby and cafe, tenants can reach the upper floors via a grand staircase or glass-walled elevators.

Naturally, the interiors are built according to Ferring's specifications. The offices and laboratories, which would typically require a quiet atmosphere, are situated on the edges of the floor plate to maximize natural light. The collaborative meeting places are positioned towards the middle, acting in unison with the atrium to create a dynamic central core. The building's horizontal expression, emphasized by the overhanging dividers between each floor, reflect the area's low-rise built form. The 39,000-square-metre development should be ready for workers in 2019.
