Vietnam's third largest city has celebrated the ground breaking for a 45-storey tower that will be the tallest of its kind in the country's northern coastal region. The Sunday ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and representatives from Vingroup, the skyscraper's venerable developer, who officially kickstarted construction on the 148-metre-high building.

Spanning over 30,000 square metres, the 308-room Vinpearl Hotel City will become the first five-star hotel in Hai Phong — which is located about 120 kilometres east of Hanoi — upon its completion. Over 18,000 square metres of retail, mostly housed in a supplementary podium structure, will offer a grocery store, gaming complex, cinema, and department store. Renderings indicate the top of the podium will be host to an array of amenities, including green space and a sweeping pool.

Dallas-based firm Humphreys & Partners provided architectural services on the project, which takes the form of a glassy edifice clad in a unique vocabulary of vertical fins. The resulting motif emulates the natural current of the nearby Cấm River.

The landmark development is expected to propel the image of Hai Phong as a place for investment, helping to revitalize the city and encourage other major building projects. The building should be completed by the end of 2017 with opening pegged for 2018.
