New York City isn't afraid of a little architectural experimentation. Arguably the world's most identifiable metropolis, the largest city in the United States is a magnet for international architects looking to make their mark on the impressive Manhattan skyline. But it's the modern and unmistakable designs of SHoP Architects that have produced some of the biggest local landmarks. Brooklyn's Barclays Center is just one of their wondrous creations, and a tilted twin tower complex at 626 First Avenue is setting the stage for what to expect as work on the supertall 111 West 57th Street advances.
Transforming a stretch of the East River with its tilted elevations, the American Copper Buildings are setting a new standard for highrise architecture in the city. Comprised of 48- and 41-storey towers, the approximately 800-unit development is clad in curtain wall glass and copper paneling. As the buildings age, the copper will take on a unique patina, changing the entire exterior appearance of the complex to a vivid green.
The two luxury rental towers by JDS Development are connected by a three-level sky bridge that affords some drool-worthy views of the city. This dramatic space will be where residents can take a dip in the 75-foot-long lap pool or unwind and relax in the comfort lounge. No space is wasted in the development — even the roof of the sky bridge will be populated by three private terraces accessed by the bordering apartment units.
While the sky bridge is undeniably the showpiece of the project, you'd be wrong to assume that's the only dedicated place for entertainment and recreation. Amenities on floors 28 and 29 give residents the opportunity to enjoy rock climbing and yoga alongside a juice bar, art studio, playroom, and communal kitchen. If the views aren't stellar enough, the roof of the east tower will hold an elongated infinity pool and cabanas to seal the deal for any discriminating tenants. The residences, which include a package of affordable units, are slated for completion in 2017.
