A recent proposal from Glaswegian architectural firm Stallan-Brand for an ultra-modern 17-storey hotel at 2-8 Dixon Street will completely transform the local skyline. The site is located at the foot of Glasgow's trendy Buchanan Street shopping district, which is the second busiest of its type after London's Oxford Street. The historic city centre is already home to one of the largest collections of Georgian and Victorian commercial architecture in the United Kingdom

With a projected cost of £20 million, the 17-storey hotel will replace an under-utilized surface lot. Lead architect Paul Stallan predicts that the project will help remedy the current lack of an obvious connection between the bustling city centre and relatively quiet riverfront.

Located alongside the River Clyde, the 2-8 Dixon Street hotel development will work to enliven the area. The inclusion of a multi-storey retail, drinking, and dining podium will help bring the architect's vision of a vibrant connection between the city centre and the riverfront to fruition.

Designed as a figurative tribute to Glasgow and its iconic street scenes, bridges, and cranes, as well as the well-established Glasgow School, 2-8 Dixon Street will become a Glasgow icon in its own right, a splash of ultra-modern design rooted in the city's past.

To be built as a 150-bed hotel within easy walking distance of the city centre and the Glasgow Subway, 2-8 Dixon Street will be set atop a 5,400-square-foot mixed-use commercial podium with a 17th floor Sky Terrace that offers sweeping city views. Set for completion in 2019, the project will likely be a welcome addition to the Glasgow city centre, the architecturally bold city already home to some of the UK's most iconic modern architecture.

SkyriseCities will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
