Following a series of delays and setbacks dating as far back as the project's original announcement in 2008, it appears that at long last there will be a ground breaking ceremony for the Chinatown Eastern Tower by the end of the year. To be developed by the local Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation (PCDC), the 23-storey mixed-use Chinatown Eastern Tower Community Center is a residence and community centre slated for completion by Fall 2017.

In the wake of a $1.3 million state grant, the $76 million project will soon get underway. Governor Thomas Wolfe that will go towards the creation of the 17,000-square-foot community centre and public recreation facility that will be located at ground level.

Additionally set to include room for 21,000 square feet of office space, the attached podium level structure will house the community centre and recreation facilities. As for the residential tower, it will rise 23 storeys above grade, and will contain 150 units. In addition to this, there will be 8,700 square feet of retail with frontage likely along busy Vine Street.

Located just blocks from downtown Philadelphia and a quick walk to transit, the new development will place residents and community centre users in the heart of the action.

Once complete, the Chinatown Eastern Tower Community Center will be a welcome addition not only to Chinatown, but to the broader city as well.
