Part of the ongoing transformation of Manhattan's trendy Nolita neighbourhood from gritty to artsy, 152 Elizabeth Street will soon bring "ultra luxury condos" to the neighbourhood. With seven units spread across seven floors and starting at $5,750,000, the 32,000-square-foot development will offer residents a great deal of living space, which is a luxury unto itself in the middle of Manhattan's Lower East Side.

Designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando for international developer Sumaida + Khurana in collaboration with interior designer Michael Gabellini, each unit has been custom-designed to highlight craft, detail, and quality. While the impeccable interior finishes and attention to detail will be a stand-out feature of the development, it will more than likely be the living green wall, composed of English ivy, Boston ivy, Virginia creepers, jasmine clematis, and climbing hydrangeas, which will steal the show.

That being said, the front of the building, ensconced in a series of oversized airport-quality soundproof glass panels, will give the front of the building a distinct, airy look, especially in contrast to the surrounding streetscape. Adding to the impact of the new development upon the street, the floor-to-ceiling glass will effectively place residents and their carefully crafted and curated apartments on permanent display.

Building amenities will include a special de-humidification system for art lovers, which will help protect residents' personal pieces from degradation, along with an automated parking garage, and 24-hour concierge.

As seen above, 152 Elizabeth is already beginning to fit into the streetscape, with a massing and diminutive height that won't dominate the local landscape, letting the structure's distinctive architecture speak for itself. Set for completion in 2017, 152 Elizabeth will be a welcome addition to the neighbourhood, a marker of things to come.

SkyriseCities will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
