After jettisoning its traditional media division, the L.A. Times' parent company, the Tribune Media Company, has been busy at the task of monetizing its considerable real estate holdings, up to and including the future of the site upon which the historic L.A. Times Building has sat since 1935. Designed by Gensler for the Vancouver-based Onni Group, the proposal for 222 W 2nd Street includes plans for a 30-storey stacked-box glass tower, which would rise above a former parking lot, part of the new structure set to replace a 1970s-era addition to the L.A. Times Building that was originally designed by William Pereira.

Set to become a mixed-use development, the proposed tower will be host to 107 condo units, 534,000 square feet of office space, and 7,200 square feet of ground-level retail spread across 30 storeys. The site is already a busy one with the construction of the Regional Connector subway tunnel and transit hub well underway. The new development will sit directly above the planned 7th Street/Metro Center Station, one of three new stops on the 1.9-mile extension. If carried out as planned, 222 W 2nd Street will be a complicated project, due to the demands inherent to a site that contains both a significant heritage asset and a working subway build site just below.
