Designed by Aedas lead architect Andrew Bromberg for Gemdale, plans for what is being called The Cloud feature a futuristic office complex that seems to float above a multi-level terrace, complete with public space, parkland, and retail. Set at 22 storeys, the 45,000-square-metre mixed-use office tower development will occupy a central portion of Changshou Road in Shanghai, close to the metro and in the heart of the city's bustling financial district.

Resting upon a multi-level retail podium, The Cloud's base features a series of generous setbacks, which provide the structure with ample space for public realm considerations, and two pedestrian connections to the metro. Drawing inspiration from its namesake, The Cloud's signature material softness and airy aesthetic, along with the tower portion's illusory ability to float above its podium, will make the development a breath of fresh air in central Shanghai, part of a nationwide effort to build better cities and promote cleaner air.

Building on the sustainability theme, The Cloud will incorporate a handful of green features, such as sunshades, high-performance glass, and living vegetation. Paired with an emphasis upon sound city-building principles, including the merits of mixed-use development and connections to mass transit, the centrally located development will be a welcome addition to the city.

SkyriseCities will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
