The innovative $1.5 billion medical facility will replace the recently demolished Penn Tower building at One Convention Avenue and include 500 inpatient rooms, 47 operating and interventional spaces, and an emergency department. To act as a central hub for Penn Medicine, the 15-storey oblong glass and aluminum structure will be linked via elevated walkway to the nearby Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.

Occupancy is expected in early 2021, but by then, Philadelphia's skyline will be adorned with another Foster + Partners-designed building in the Comcast Innovation and Technology Center. The supertall, Philadelphia's new tallest building, is scheduled to be complete in 2018.
