Bjarke Ingels Group has unveiled flashy renderings of their first project in Los Angeles. The Gallo family, owner of the Rancho Cold Storage facility on Mesquit Street, has partnered with VE Equities and the Danish architecture firm to create a mixed-use village at an industrial site fronting the LA River, which itself is due for a Gehry-designed revitalization.

The project will take the form of stratified building blocks covered in glazing and a concrete superstructure frame. Set to replace a group of warehouse buildings, approximately 250 residences, 800,000 square feet of office space, two boutique hotels, fine-grained retail, and restaurant space have been planned for the 30-storey complex. Each setback of the ziggurat-like structure will host a landscaped terrace.

The proposal at 670 Mesquit builds off the flourishing success of the Arts District, which has seen significant change in recent years driven by a Bohemian and creative populace. The project is also expected to boost the work being undertaken to overhaul the river.

"As a gateway to the Arts District and the LA River, it will constitute a major step toward reclaiming and transforming the river bank into a vital new urban landscape that can be enjoyed and appreciated by residents and visitors to this vibrant part of Los Angeles," said Bjarke Ingels. "The Arts District is experiencing a rapid renaissance, drawing creatives from all fields from fine arts to engineering. We have asked ourselves if we can renew the Arts District by embracing rather than replacing the qualities that have spawned this unique urban culture."
