A new mixed-use development in Midtown Atlanta will become the city's first "Class-T" office asset — a co-located workplace design that emphasizes collaboration — with technological innovation at the core of its interior structure. John Portman & Associates, architect of the 770,000-square-foot Coda at Tech Square, recently celebrated the start of construction.

Portman Holdings is developing the project, which will contain advanced research facilities, a high-speed data centre, outdoor gathering spaces, unique retail offerings, and a "Collaborative Core" at the heart of the building. The Georgia Institute of Technology will serve as the anchor tenant of the LEED Platinum-seeking complex. Chilled beams to control temperature, reuse of greywater for the high-power computing centre, and automatic sun shading systems are among the building's environmental features.

"The best projects are the ones where the client's imagination challenges the architect," said John Portman & Associates Principal and Vice President of Design Pierluca Maffey. "Coda started with a compelling programmatic vision set forth by Georgia Tech and unfolded with Portman Holdings' commitment to contributing to and in executing that vision. John Portman & Associates was able to creatively translate all of that input into a design which meets the economic goals of the client, the academic goals of the educational institution, and pushes the imagination further by engaging the participation of the general public."

The 21-storey facility is expected to act as a magnet for leading technology talent when it opens in early 2019, with constant support provided by the existing student base, researchers, and professors. Coda has been designed to facilitate an environment of relationship-building and interaction between start-ups, Fortune 500 companies, and university affiliates.
