After the resounding success of their Bosco Verticale project in Milan, Stefano Boeri Architects is bringing their vertical forest concept to Nanjing, China. Set to be the first of its kind in Asia, the verdant two-tower project is infused with abundant greenery overflowing the buildings' balconies. Stretching over a 6,000-square-metre area, the exterior envelope will be outfitted with 600 trees, 500 medium-sized trees, and 2,500 cascading plants and shrubs.

Nanjing Green Towers, promoted by Nanjing Yang Zi State-owned National Investment Group, will be located in Nanjing Pukou District. The area is expected to be a catalyst in the modernization of southern Jiangsu province and the development of the Yangtze River economic zone. In addition to its contribution to the skyline, the project's rich expanses of vegetation will absorb an estimated 25 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year and produce about 60 kilograms of oxygen every day.

The taller 200-metre tower will host offices from the eighth to 35th floor, with a museum, green architecture school, and private club on the rooftop. The 108-metre tower will contain a Hyatt hotel with 247 rooms ranging in size from 35 to 150 square metres. The podium will rise to a height of 20 metres and hold commercial, recreational, and educational uses, including shops, a food market, restaurants, a conference hall, and exhibition spaces.

Stefano Boeri has already fulfilled his vision for urban forestation in Milan and Lausanne, with work on similar projects underway in other Chinese cities including Shanghai and Chongqing. The development, which would become the third prototype upon completion, is scheduled to be finished in 2018.
