As one of the most highly anticipated development projects in New York City, Three World Trade Center has continued to progress by leaps and bounds since SkyriseCities last reported on the project as we approach its 2018 launch date.
As outlined in the World Trade Center (WTC) Master Plan, Three World Trade Center has been envisioned as the center of the World Trade Center complex’s commercial hub. Three World Trade Center — which has been through several phases of development since its announcement in 2006 — is part of the final phase in the extensive 15-year redevelopment project that has dramatically redesigned the former Ground Zero site.
Located on the southwestern corner of the World Trade Center’s 16-acre site opposite the Memorial and Cultural Center, the 80-storey retail and office space will be located in the heart of New York’s Financial District.
Conceived by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and developed by Silverstein Properties, Three World Trade Center’s 2.5-million-square-foot site will boast five floors of above- and below-ground retail as well as 54 floor dedicated to office space. On ground level, the project will include a 19-metre, three-storey lobby that will connect the site’s 46,000 square metres of retail space and provide access to the recently constructed WTC Transportation Hub.
Offsetting its status as a supertall skyscraper — and the associated negative environmental impact it's construction and operation would create — Three World Trade Center will incorporate green technology into its day-to-day operations to increase its sustainability, with the project expected to attain a LEED Gold Certification upon completion.
With construction of the building’s shorter wider podium nearly completed, with steel framing and windows in place, construction of building’s 329-square-metre (1,079-foot) frame continues to extend upwards into the office space floors as it reaches its final stages of development.
Taking a closer look at the pictures, the building’s curtain wall glazing — which previously covered approximately half of the building’s exterior — now rises up to the building’s highest floors, providing a shining veneer that accentuates the building’s 360-degree view of New York’s skyline.
Since SkyriseCities last reported on Three World Trade Center’s development, little progress has been made in the installation of the tower’s diagonal bracing. Continuing to rise approximately half way up the tower, the bracing elongates the project’s stepped profile that comprises the building's office spaces on the upper levels.
