New site images show the horizontal slats being installed on the facade of the V&A Museum of Design in Dundee, Scotland, the first building in the United Kingdom designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who also designed the stadium for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. When the facility opens in 2018, it will become the first design-focused museum in the United Kingdom outside of London.

Envisioned as a public living room for Scotland's fourth largest city, the building aims to provide a place for socialization and to reconnect people with the historic River Tay waterfront. Its rough exterior was informed by the natural cliffs along Scotland's northeastern coastline. Kengo Kuma & Associates was selected following an international competition that collected 120 entries.

"I think V&A Dundee is a totally stunning design which provides exactly the right kind of space to tell the story of Scottish design," said Tristram Hunt, Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, after receiving a construction tour of the project. "This new design museum speaks both to the incredible heritage and sense of place in Dundee, but is also a statement of optimism and ambition about the future."

Dundee's track record of innovation — it had a hand in the production of aspirin, orange marmalade, and the video game series Grand Theft Auto — was honoured in 2014 when it became the United Kingdom's first UNESCO City of Design. Dundee's historic role as a leading manufacturer of jute and other textiles has ingrained design into the programming of Abertay University and the University of Dundee. V&A Dundee is imagined as a flagship project within a £1 billion, 30-year master plan designed to create an inclusive city of the future.
