Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, was on hand to lay the foundation stone for the new Meydan One Mall development, the first phase of the multi-faceted Meydan One mega development slated for the visionary desert city. Leading the delegation at the evening event, Sheikh Mohammed broke ground on a project that will include 620 retail shops, including two major department stores and a 131,150-square-foot hypermarket.

The mall has been designed in close collaboration with the plethora of retailers that will occupy the spaces, each demanding a consumer experience that meets their respective brand requirements. Like something out of Las Vegas, high-end luxury brands will be situated around the 1,315-foot-long Central Canyon, which is highlighted by a surfeit of bright displays of various sizes. A 160-metre by 100-metre retractable skylight will blur the line between indoor and outdoor shopping, while the largest dancing water fountain in the world (measuring 380 metres long) aims to impress the drove of tourists set to descend on the entertainment destination.

A one-kilometre indoor ski slope — the longest of its kind in the world — and a 258,300-square-foot indoor multi-purpose sports facility provide customized spaces for football, basketball, volleyball, cricket, golf, and a number of other activities. Add over 100 food and beverage outlets and a 21-screen cinema to the menu, and the stage is set for the massive development to become the talk of the town when the first phase opens in 2020.

Like any masterplanned Dubai development, Meydan One will feature multiple hotels and residences scattered around a megatall tower. The 161-storey Dubai One would become the tallest residential building in the world, knocking off 432 Park Avenue by almost 300 metres.
