Another surface parking lot in Los Angeles is biting the dust and giving way to a 66-storey tower. A newly released rendering showcases the rectangular skyscraper at 925 South Figueroa Street, mere steps from the Olympic Tower site and the L.A. Live entertainment complex. Designed by CallisonRTKL for Regalian LLC, the project landed on the desks of the Los Angeles Planning Department earlier this year.

While the streamlined design and the absence of balconies are architectural elements more akin to an office development, City documents detail the true functions of the building. The project entails the provision of 200 condominiums, a 220-key hotel, 94,000 square feet of commercial space, and a 617-stall parking garage. The lone rendering released so far shows the colossal parking and retail podium topped by a swimming pool and landscaped spaces. Each glass elevation would stretch beyond the roof of the tower, creating a series of disconnected fins that interact to become the building's crown.

CallisonRTKL also designed the multi-tower Oceanwide Plaza development across from the Staples Center, which forms part of the L.A. Live entertainment complex. That $1 billion development will include three towers split between condominium and hotel uses. The retail podium, dubbed The Collection at Oceanwide Plaza, takes the form of a multi-level, indoor-outdoor pedestrian mall.
