An international design competition for a landmark mixed-use development in the Hengqin District of Zhuhai, China has resulted in a winning three-tower scheme by Hong Kong's 10 Design. The Huafa Plaza development fuses three key development sites and will accommodate over 300,000 square metres of boutique retail, food and beverage facilities, and office space.

10 Design has set out a vision for three highrise towers together with three bespoke retail environments set to complete in 2019. "It is important that the development addresses the waterfront location and the park along the shoreline," said Gordon Affleck, Design Partner at 10 Design. "So the creation of intimate ground level spaces and garden courtyards in lieu of a traditional mall was key to the success of the master plan."

A batch of renderings released by the architect shows a tessellated cladding system adorning each of the three buildings, as setbacks reinforce the dramatic height of the complex. On the ground, the images portray a cascading waterfall flowing into various reflecting pools.

"When Huafa Plaza opens, it will become one of the most dynamic destinations on Hengqin Island, offering vibrant retail environments, waterfront F&B facilities, and office spaces surrounded by green clusters of gardens and terraces," said Miriam Auyeung, Partner at 10 Design.
