Another supertall has risen in Asia, this time in Seoul, where a colourful display of fireworks marked the completion of the 556-metre-tall Lotte World Tower. Now the fifth tallest building in the world, the Kohn Pedersen Fox-designed skyscraper boasts a number of record-breaking amenities that set the standard for mixed-use integration.
Opened to a throng of camera-ready crowds, the 123-storey building boasts the world's highest glass-bottomed observation deck, the world's highest swimming pool, and the world's fastest elevator all under a tapered envelope of glass and steel. Housing retail, offices, a seven-star luxury hotel, and an officetel, the building's requisite observation deck and cafe allows visitors to absorb panoramic views of the city.
The organic design of the tower is inspired by Korean ceramics, porcelain, and calligraphy, with the ground-to-roof seam pointing toward the old city centre. This curved profile is clad in a light-toned silver glass and a patterned white lacquered metal. The development also holds a large concert hall, an aquarium, a cinema, and a food hall.
Forum contributor inno4321 was below the beast as it erupted with dazzling fireworks on Monday. Video footage from media outlet NewdailyTV captured the beautiful scene in its entirety:
Lotte World Tower is bested in height only by the Ping An Finance Center, Makkah Royal Clock Tower, Shanghai Tower, and the current reigning king of skyscrapers, Burj Khalifa.
