The 223-metre Carlton Centre in Johannesburg will no longer lay claim to the title of Africa's tallest building after the Pinnacle Towers in Nairobi, which just broke ground, is built to a height of at least 300 metres. The supertall complex by Dubai-based White Lotus Group and Jabavu Village, the real estate arm of Hass Petroleum, will contain anywhere from 67 to 70 floors, while a shorter tower of 45 storeys will encompass a Hilton hotel.

The twin tower development will also include 200 residential units operated by Hilton and 20 levels of office space above a three-storey luxury mall. Five floors of retail and restaurants satisfy the public appetite for multifunctional space, while private tenants will enjoy exclusive use of an open-air infinity pool, luxury spa, and gym. A helipad will jut out from the side of the tallest tower, which will be home to Africa's highest public viewing gallery.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta was in attendance for the ceremonial ground breaking, where the tower's foundation stone was laid. The building is being constructed in Nairobi's Upper Hill area and is scheduled for completion by December 2019.
