Like the products it sells to the masses, Apple stores the world over have gained a reputation for their streamlined and crisp interior designs. But the tech giant has outdone itself with its latest store, prominently featured at the Dubai Mall, which appears less of a retail outlet and more of a tourist destination. That's because the space is interconnected with the hustle and bustle of Dubai's urban fabric, with a two-level containment and 56-metre-wide terrace — a first for any Apple store — that overlooks the mesmerizing Dubai Fountains.

A natural fit for the complex, which attracts roughly 80 million visitors every year, the new Apple Dubai Mall celebrates the sun by utilizing its ambient daylight. Innovative 'Solar Wings' designed by Foster + Partners shade the outdoor terrace during the scorching-hot days while opening up to reveal waterside views in the evening. A theatrical display of kinetic art and engineering, the moveable feature is inspired by a falcon spreading its wings, and takes about one minute to fully open and close. The shaded terrace features nine large trees set within planters that are integrated with seating. These planters rotate mechanically to ensure the trees receive ample sunlight.

"The design of Apple Dubai Mall is about creating an exceptional architectural and social experience for visitors, bringing to the fore new ideas about the evolving role of Apple Flagships in the community," said Stefan Behling, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners. "I am sure Apple Dubai Mall will become a true people's place."

Multiple layers of tubes form a dense net for each wing, made entirely of lightweight carbon fibre. The rods are distributed in higher concentration where the solar radiation is most intense over the year. "The opening and closing of these majestic Solar Wings is analogous to a delicate ballet recital — but on a monumental scale," added Behling. "In some ways it is a very spiritual experience, with the sun streaming through them and creating the most delicate and beautiful patterns of light and shade — a seamless blend of technology and culture."

Glazed pivoting doors welcome visitors to the store, where The Avenue, a specially designed area for accessories display, showcases Apple's signature products. Apple Dubai Mall is also launching the brand's new global in-store experience, 'Today at Apple', where on-site teachers will offer advice and training on photography, filmmaking, art and design.
