JDS Development is evidently moving ahead with constructing Brooklyn's first supertall, a 73-storey tower set to rise above the landmarked Brooklyn Dime Savings Bank. The developer, who has left indelible marks on the New York cityscape, posted a brief video on Instagram last week showing the installation of massive steel caissons, a necessary step to stabilize the 325-metre-tall tower's foundation.

9 DeKalb received approvals from the Landmarks Preservation Commission in April 2016, clearing the way for the skyward launch of Brooklyn's tallest tower. SHoP Architects has come aboard to design an interlocking hexagonal skyscraper clad in glass and bronze. With over 500 residences and ground-level retail planned, the project is a huge deal for the urban fabric of the New York borough, and symbolizes Brooklyn's explosive cultural renaissance in the form of an Art Deco-esque beacon.

The building's impact on the skyline is foretold in a series of renderings, which also show how 9 DeKalb will meet the street. A number of new pathways and public spaces aim to improve connectivity throughout the site and its surroundings, while the interior of the bank will be restored and repurposed to form part of a new mid-block connection between Flatbush Avenue and Fulton Street. Completion is expected to take place sometime in 2020, if all goes smoothly.
